If you've read the first book Cursed, then you know Zack and Emma met working a previous kidnapping case: Captured is that case. If not, then you have joined the series at just the right time! As a specialist, Emma has been flown across the country to help on a serial kidnapping/murder case. The clock is ticking, knowing the latest victim has only a few days left at most. Despite their growing attraction to one another, the two agents never lose their professional focus to save this child. As such, this is a crime mystery novel with a romantic twist. I love that Emma is strong female character. I absolutely love that Zack respects her abilities, despite being an Alpha male. Their banter breaks the tension and forges a friendship that allows many of Emma's self-imposed walls down. Zack is perfect boyfriend material, if only Demeter would allow this Siren to have one. This was a great prequel, setting up the strong pull found between the two that occurs in book 1 of the series, Cursed.
Review by pearls originally posted on Oct. 6, 2013 Is Love A Curse : I personally love Greek mythology, so I really enjoyed this take on the Siren legend. Cursed for their role in allowing Penelope's abduction, everything and one they love is stripped from them. This story combines the old legends with the modern stories of werewolves, likewise a cursed breed. The weariness of carrying their burdens is evident in the characters' voices. Emma fights her attraction to Zack, knowing it will cause his death. But love is a strong force that neither of them can ignore. The story is set against a missing person case being investigated by the two, who are FBI partners. Solving this case could be their redemption, saving not only the victims, but also their chance at an HEA. I liked that the author stayed true to most of the paranormal mythology, not trying to introduce too many new ideas. Zack and Emma's chemistry is undeniable. And the role of the quirky friend is perfect as she bounces from one emotion to another.
Emma Monroe is a Siren, cursed by the gods and bound to earth to atone for an ancient failure. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now that she works missing persons cases for the FBI, it could be just a rescue away. Unless her new partner leads her astray.
