Inspirational Warrior Goddesses Reading List 2014

Twenty-six years ago, I watched my mother battle cancer.   Now, I watch as my friends and cousins battle.  Tink and CherryMary have similar stories.  The positive lining to this dark cloud is that treatment and early detection of cancer has improved the chances of survival for women, men, and children.  Cancer is no longer the automatic death sentence it once was.  We are grateful to all the researches and fundraisers that have worked to make this come about.

Literature has also noticed the survivors.  The role of cancer was once to provide the pain and angst in the story.  Now cancer is the jumping board to a new lease on life.  Authors have delved into the psyches and fears of survivors and helped them to reach for their stars.  The cancer heroine is now a source of inspiration.

Many of our auction authors have heroines who are cancer survivors.  In Sable Hunter's Cowboy Heat, Libby has spent most of her young life in hospitals.   Now that she is in remission, she plans on LIVING!  Skye Michael's Anne's Courage follows the journey of a breast cancer survivor as she deals with her body image issues.  And this year's Literary Ambassador Linda Gillard shared her fears from her own fight with cancer in the Gothic romance Cauldstane.  The Warrior Goddesses spirit is alive and well in these heroines.

So I sought out additional novels that featured cancer survivors to list here for you. I must send a shout out to the bloggers at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books who first compiled these titles in 2011. I simply cleaned it up and added a few titles.  Please feel free to add to the list in the comments below:

Is it Sinful to Surrender to Love?

Sinful Surrender
Psychic Menage, Book One
by Houston Havens
an Erotic Romance

Sub-Genres: Ménage, Paranormal, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Themes: Futuristic, Post-Apocalyptic, Dystopian

AMAZON LINK
pearls' review:  4 Stars
SciFi is probably the hardest genre for an author to win me over.  Houston Havens' narrative of a post-Apocalyptical world with warring factions, faeries, aliens, and psychics could have easily become overwhelming on the techie side.  Or with its ménage four-some, it could have left the plot as a blurry backdrop, choosing to hide in the bedroom.  Luckily, Ms. Havens' story achieved a perfect  balance of both.  There was action, adventure, high risk rescues, starships and medical miracles.  There was skinny-dipping at dusk, dream sex rendezvous, and the kind of true love that never lets go.
Sinful Surrender is an erotic SciFi version of Plato's Cave with bits of 1984 thrown in.  Fay and her kind have been living a fairy tale version of life.  One that is shallow, as passions are forbidden.  As a psychic spy, she realizes her government has been telling lies to its people.  When she escapes to learn the truth, she encounters an enemy that is loving and caring, a world that is beautiful--and her rising emotions overwhelm her.  Faced with her government's hypocrisy and her deepening emotions, she finds herself lost.  She must learn that real emotions are not like the shallow feelings she'd grown up surrounded by and she must decide whether to surrender to their pull and live or to spend her life just barely alive.

 Book Description:

Top psychic spy Fay Avalon saw too much on her latest mind traveling mission and is now on the run from her post-catastrophic dystopian government, searching for the truth and proof. She escapes but is shot down, landing in the arms of the enemy.
In Drakker and Arlo’s world, women are so rare the men have accepted a polyandrous lifestyle. When the brothers stumble upon Fay unconscious in the wreckage of an aircraft, they are immediately attracted to her. Arlo wants to keep her, but Drakker knows they can’t. They must take her to their brother Logan Abán, leader of their people.
Logan struggles with trusting anyone, even himself. When a beautiful, intelligent, and intriguing woman falls into their laps, his denied desires for intimacy challenge his need to trust the spy. He’s frustrated by romantic Arlo’s claims of her innocence. Even when pragmatic and dominating Drakker defends her as well, Logan refuses to trust his gut.
Can one woman satisfy the diverse desires of three men? Will Logan’s fears be realized by betrayal? Is Fay to be sentenced to death as a spy, suffer a fate worse than death by being returned to her government as a traitor, or will she find a new life and love as the wife of three sexy brothers.

The Romance trailer

Romantic Excerpt

After escaping an enemy attack, Fay and two of the three brothers, Arlo and Logan, camp out for the night on their way to the rendezvous spot.
Logan’s silence made her fidget. He ended her suffering when he said, “I’d suggest to the brother outside of her affections to work harder at pleasing the woman he cares about, if he wants to win her heart.” He glanced at Arlo. “I’d suggest his brothers help him out. Perhaps, the brother on the outs and the woman got off on the wrong foot. Maybe neither of them knows how to step around that first awkward meeting to actually see each other for who they really are.”

“Just what I was thinking, bro.” Arlo smiled at Fay. “Tsi ge yu i—I mean, love, I’d like to introduce you to my brother Logan.”

“This is silly—” She felt her stomach flutter as Logan interrupted her with a kiss. She drew her hands up to push him away but stopped in midair when his lips, so warm and soft, pressed against hers again with such tenderness. His mouth moved in a slow, seductive kiss that said he truly wanted her.

He broke away. “It is a pleasure to meet you, my lovely Fay Avalon. May I have this dance with you?” His tone was deep and sexy.

Her fingers caressed her mouth where his lips had been as she spoke from behind them. “This is crazy.” Her breasts bounced with each hurried breath she took. She glanced at Arlo. “There isn’t any music. How am I to dance with him?”

Logan stood, scooping her up into his arms as Arlo started singing. “Like this,” he said, cradling her body against his in a way that wouldn’t cause her any pain. He nuzzled her neck then kissed his way up to her ear and whispered, “While we dance, will you play an innocent get to the core of the truth game with me?”

“I’m not good at games.”

“It’s not a physical game. It’s intellectual. It’s a game that allows people to get to know each other fast. However, you have to speak from the heart’s truth. If you can’t speak from the heart, you can’t play. I’ll start.”

Her arms tightened around his neck as Arlo broke into the main chorus of a beautiful ballad. Logan swayed and turned, holding her in his arms. “Fay Avalon, you tantalize me with your loveliness and your amazing strengths. You weaken my will, and that is why I fear you.”

His confession was shockingly honest and real. No man in her world would ever reveal such a truth. “You can trust me, Logan. I will not betray or lie to you.”

“Ah, but I can’t. I trusted once and was betrayed. People died because I was a fool who believed in honor.” He set her down and tapped at the bridge of her nose. “The game is…you reveal what you feel about the person in front of you.”

“But it’s important to me you understand I will do whatever it takes to prove my word and honor to you.”

“Darlin’. We’re playing a game to get to know each other, not debate or discuss issues. I told you what I thought of you and my reaction to what I was feeling. It’s your turn to tell me what you think of me and your feelings about it.”

He held her in his protective embrace, only her toes touched the ground as he carefully moved her around the fire with his long steps. He carried most of her weight as they moved to Arlo’s song.

She looked into his eyes. It was as if she saw him for the very first time. “I fight my true feelings for you because…”

His penetrating stare coaxed her to tell him why.

“Because, well…because you hold my fate in your hands. You have yet to tell me what my future will be. It’s hard to make plans when I fear I will live as a prisoner in your world. Or worse, I will carry a death sentence over my head to be enforced when all this settles down.”

“I’ll grant you a beautiful future if you tell me you care for me and will forever be true to the clan of Abán.” He held her body against him, moving in time with the song. “Do you want to honor our world and make it yours?” He stopped dancing.

She answered with her heart. “I do. Do you want me here?”

He locked his stormy eyes to hers, his gaze ablaze with passion. “I do.”

“Then let me know it. Show me in the things you say and do.” She tilted her head back expecting him to kiss her. Instead, he surprised her with his boldness.

“I never do what’s anticipated.” He pulled her closer into his chest and whispered in her ear. “It would make me boring and predictable.” He slipped his hands under her blouse and stroked his fingertips in seductive circles over her flesh. The passion in his eyes grew hotter. “I’ve desired you from the moment you walked through my front door.”

She widened her eyes in mock shock then shot her gaze over to Arlo. His raised brow and cocked head made her turn a frown back in Logan’s direction. “You said this was a game of truth.” She placed her hands over his, keeping them just below her breasts. “That’s a lie.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Logan, it was quite obvious to us all that morning the only thing you wanted to do to me was to interrogate me.” She looked at Arlo again. He shrugged and started singing another song. Coward. He was avoiding voicing his opinion.

“Then you’re all blind, because the first thing I truly wanted was to kiss those perfect lips. The second thing was to interrogate that succulent mouth of yours to make it tell me the truth about you.” He glided his touch around to the sides of her breasts.

Fay liked how his hands caressed her, and she wasn’t about to tell him to stop. His touch created a fire deep inside her, something she’d longed for all her life.

“Fay, a person can be suspicious of someone, but it doesn’t necessarily negate a very strong attraction to them. How do you think most assassins get in close for a kill? Their targets find them very attractive.”

“Hmm, didn’t think of that. What you say is true.” She felt his fingers stroke down her lower back to play with the laces holding her blouse closed. A subtle heat warmed her pussy. “I’ve known a few women who loved their husbands but didn’t trust them to be faithful.”

“See.” In one swift motion, he pulled at the laces and removed her blouse.

“Logan,” Fay whispered. Arlo’s soft singing in the background reminded her they weren’t alone.

He trailed his seductive touch to her bra straps. Slipping his fingertips beneath the material he worked the silky strips off her shoulders. She crossed her arms over her breasts to stop him from removing it.

“Logan, we can’t—”

He swept her deeper into his arms and stopped her words by pressing his mouth to her ear. “Tell me true…do you desire me?”

Without breaking his hold, she was able to brace a short distance between them, just enough to gaze into his eyes. “Truth?”

“Nothing but the truth shall ever pass between us.” He tilted his head forward and down, closing the space between them. He brushed his mouth softly against hers, merging their heat, and then did it again. He licked the seam of her lips, and she couldn’t help herself. It was a physical need. She granted his tongue entry.

Her bra fell free before she circled her arms around him. His touch ignited her flesh as he moved his fingers to the front of her jeans and worked her zipper until her pants dropped to the ground. “The truth is—” she murmured at the release of his lips.

“The truth,” he whispered in her ear. “Even though I fear my knees will fail me should you tell me I disgust you.” Logan cupped each breast before dropping his hands to stroke several gentle passes over her ass. He kissed and caressed, roaming his hands over her, although he did take care not to touch the area of her wound.

She stroked her nails up his back in wanton need, realizing if she were honest with herself, she felt the same desire for him she’d felt for Arlo and Drakker. “If my heart were to speak the truth, it would say you grabbed my sexual interest the moment I saw you in those tight white pants and red silk shirt.”

Her remark brought a proud smile to his lips. “Okay…so my clothes got you heated up.”

“No, it was the hard body beneath those clothes.”

“So…when did I capture your heart?”

“Honestly?”

“Honest.”

“When you became my hero.”

“I’m your hero? How? When?”

She smiled up at him. “Escaping the Nike silo. I still can’t believe you carried me all that way to safety.”

“How do you know that?”

“Whenever I woke up you were there, and Chandra confirmed it when I asked her.”

“Ah.” He smiled then frowned. “That was all it took?”

“Yes.”

“Funny, it happened for me then as well.”

“It did?”

“Yep, I knew in my gut I already loved you when you admitted you risked your life for me. That’s when I knew I couldn’t live without you. Hell, I didn’t want to ever let you go. It’s why I wouldn’t let anyone else carry you. You were mine. I knew somewhere within you, you had to love me. For you to sacrifice yourself like that…you had to love me.”

Providing the Blanket of Freedom You Sleep Under (Giveaway & Excerpts)

I interrupt this blog with an important message:  Laurie Roma just dropped off 2 excerpts from her new series, INTO THE DREAM, book 1 of the ARCADIAN series, coming April 16th on Siren Bookstrand Publishing.

Allison Summers is having the mother of all bad days. As a surgeon, Allie is a strong woman who has led a difficult life. She is fighting to make the best of her situation, but everything changes when she is struck by lightning and finds herself transported to another world.

Arcadian Princes Tynan, Cael and Ryder Dracor have been looking for the woman who will complete their souls. Born in a world with a shortage of females, they fear that day will never come. When a golden-haired goddess suddenly appears they are shocked, but know they want her as their mate. Allie wants to go home but now that they’ve found her, they don’t want to let her go…

When wills clash and legacies are unveiled, it seems as though Allie was destined to become part of this world. But as she struggles with her new life can she find a way to truly be happy and embrace being an Arcadian?

 STORY EXCERPT #1

“Shit…”

Allie stared up at the dark-red sky and two, count them, two purple moons in horror.

Weird.

She was in a coma. That was it. She must be in a coma having some fucking weird-ass dream. The lightning must have damaged her brain somehow. That was the only explanation that made what she saw plausible. And even then she had no idea she had such an active imagination.

She slowly sat up and looked around. The air felt thicker here, as if her lungs had to work harder to breath. Her body moved, but it was as if it were in slow motion, like she could bend the very air to her will.

Weirder.

Allie looked around to see she was in some kind of metal structure. It reminded her of the building that had just been started, the foundation all metal beams and drywall. Only there was no drywall. There were metal sheets acting as the walls, and gossamer lengths of dark material hanging from the beams, casting eerie shadows through the room.

She was on a ledge of some kind, on the second floor. There was a big cutout in the center of the structure of the four-story building that allowed her to see the ground floor. Down below there were plastic-looking containers stacked against the far wall, making it look like a warehouse of sorts.

It was all familiar but not, and what scared her more was the colors of this place all looked brighter, more vivid like she was seeing everything in HD color or something.

This was really fucking weird, but at least she dreamed herself some shelter.

Allie scrambled to her knees as a noise sounded in the distance. Grabbing hold of her fallen backpack, she hurried toward the dubious safety of the back wall where she could still view downstairs in case anyone came at her, but she would be hidden away in the shadows. She took a few steps back and bumped into something hard, something warm…something very much alive.

Allie tried to scream, but a hand clamped down over her mouth, holding it in. A deep voice rumbled from behind her, far above her head. Panic washed over her as she began to struggle. She fought with everything she had but couldn’t free herself. She bit down hard on the hand over her mouth, but the enormously strong arm wrapped around her just held her tighter against the body pressed up behind her.

The man spoke again, his voice a deep growl that made her body shudder. Part fear yes, but part something else that she didn’t want to think about.

What the hell was she thinking?

Allie gave up struggling and shook her head, trying to convey that she had no clue what he was saying. The man must have understood because he spun her around, holding tight to her arms to look down at her.

Holy shit…

The man holding her was a fucking giant. He must have been at least seven feet tall, far bigger than any man she had ever seen before. He towered over her with his powerfully built frame. He had a strong, chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, and lush, full lips made for kissing. His long black hair hung loose around his shoulders with two braids at the sides of his temples.

The giant had on black leather pants and a soft leather vest that had a variety of knives and other weapons sticking out of the specially made garment. Around his waist he wore a belt with an actual sword hanging down the side of his leg

He was a warrior, like something out of her wildest fantasies. Allie would have said she had never seen such a beautiful man before...but he wasn’t a man. Whatever this was holding her had bright, glowing gold eyes that seemed to pierce straight into her soul. And by glowing she meant glowing an iridescent-golden glow that was definitely not human.

Maybe this was a dream after all…

That was her thought until he opened his mouth to speak again and she saw his fangs.

Shit.

Or maybe it was a nightmare.

Allie’s gaze flew up to those glowing eyes and tried to keep her voice from trembling as she spoke. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand you. I have no idea what you’re saying!”

The man froze. He used one hand to push the hood off of her head so he could get a good look at her. He sucked in a breath, and as those golden eyes burned into hers, Allie wasn’t sure if she should be relieved or try to run as one of his large hands reached out to gently trail his hard, callused fingertips down her cheek in a reverent touch. He touched her hair lightly, rubbing a few strands together between his fingertips as if he couldn’t believe it was real.

In the next second she was swung around in his arms again, her back held tight to his chest with one of his large hands over her mouth.

Shit! The animal man was going to eat her or something.

And not in a good way…

ADULT EXCERPT  #2

“You declared you needed time alone in the bathing chamber, yet you reached out to us in your mind as you shaved this little pussy,” Tynan’s voice rumbled out as he lowered himself to his knees so he was perfectly aligned with her now soaking pussy. “It is only fitting that we should get a tasty treat for being good mates before we dine downstairs.”

“Look at all that sweet juice,” Cael purred, his voice making Allie’s body clench with need. Allie’s gasp was caught by Ryder as he swept his tongue deep into her mouth. He swallowed her moan of pleasure as she felt Tynan stroke his tongue over the bare folds of her pussy.

Tynan growled with pleasure. “She is delicious.”

“I can smell her cream. Hurry, so we can have our turn,” Cael ordered.

Allie’s eyes opened wide at his words, and she watched as Cael grinned down at her.

“Yes, mate. Each of us is going to eat your sweet little pussy until you come in our mouths. Only then we will take you down to the festival.”

Oh god, she would be a mess by the time they were through with her. They couldn’t possibly…but they did. Tynan chose that moment to shove his tongue deep inside her pussy, stabbing and fucking it into her as if it were a small cock.

Allie writhed in ecstasy on the table. Ryder and Cael held her in place, and Tynan continued to fuck her with his tongue. He continued to shove his tongue inside her as he used the flat of end of two of his fingertips to slap lightly on her clit. Before she knew it she screamed into Ryder’s mouth as she came, her pussy rhythmically clenching on Tynan’s invading tongue.

When her body settled back down onto the table, she felt Cael taking Tynan’s place between her legs. Cael immediately went to work licking and sucking up any stray juice that Tynan had missed, which soon had her pussy creaming even more.

Ryder released her and moved back as Tynan leaned down, sharing the taste of her own juices with her as his kissed her deep. There was something deeply erotic about tasting herself on her lover’s lips right after he had tongue-fucked her to orgasm. Allie reached up and shoved a hand into his hair, drawing Tynan down closer to her while she felt Ryder’s mouth close over her breast, sucking onto her aching nipple.

Cael’s hum of pleasure at the taste of her had her body shaking in pure rapture as she felt the sound settle straight into the tight bud of her clit. As if he heard her, Cael moved up so his lips clasped tightly around the tiny bud, sucking gently while he flicked his tongue over it. Allie’s body began to shake as he continued his tender assault on her body. Suddenly Allie felt Cael shove a long thick finger into her clenching pussy. He hooked the finger inside her, rubbing at her G-spot with such accuracy it brought her to another startling release that made her cry out into Tynan’s mouth.

When Cael was finished, he pulled back and stood up. Tynan and Cael stared down at her with love burning in their glowing eyes. Cael reached out to stroke his large hand over her platinum-blond hair while Tynan rubbed his hands over her breasts, massaging them gently, making her moan.

Allie’s eyes flew open as she raised her head to look down at Ryder, who had taken up position between her parted thighs. “Oh god,” she moaned as she felt an oiled finger slowly making its way up the tight channel of her ass, parting the tight muscles to gain entry. Ryder sent her a wicked grin before he began to lick and suck at her pussy while fucking his finger into her ass in a steady rhythm.

“You are so beautiful when you come, little one.” Tynan growled softly as Ryder continued to torture her body with exquisite pleasure.

“I wish we could eat your pussy all the time, spread you out for us to taste and suck whenever we wished,” Cael added.

“She was so tight on my tongue,” Tynan said to his brother, “it is a wonder that we can fit our cocks into that hot, silky heaven.”

“Oh, but she likes it when we shove our cocks into her.” Cael looked down at Allie as she lay panting on the table, moments away from another shattering climax. “You like it when we fuck our cocks so deep that you feel every spurt of our hot seed when we release inside you, right, Allison?”

The combination of their words and Ryder sucking on her clit with his finger stroking her ass made her explode. It was so overwhelming she sobbed out as she came, tears leaking down the side of her face. Ryder pulled back and placed a soft kiss on her bare mound as Tynan gathered her into his arms. Cael stroked his hand over her hair as Allie tried to pull herself together. She moved to pull her legs together, but Ryder and Cael held her still as Ryder gently cleansed her skin of any traces of their play with a soft cloth.

Tynan and Cael each picked up their own cloth. Tynan used his to clean the tears from her cheeks as Cael stroked the soft material over her body. When they were finish cleaning her, Tynan lifted the deep-red dress and smiled down at her. “Lift your arms for me, mate.”

Like a child, Allie did what he asked and let him dress her. Thoroughly sated, she looked at each of them in confusion. “What about you? You didn’t—”

Cael pressed a finger to her lips to still her words. “This was for you.”

“Your pleasure is ours,” Ryder replied solemnly.

Wow, Allie thought. At times like this she was damn glad to be stuck in their world.

Bella is forced to trust Jason with her safety, but does she dare trust him with her heart?

Excerpt #1 from Under Pressure

Her screams stopped, turning into whimpers. Shudders wracked her body as she clawed her way from the dream back into reality. Bella’s breath came out in sharp gasps as she battled to force air into her lungs. She shoved the nightmare back, held onto the sound of his voice.
Jason.
She could smell him, the spicy, sexy scent of him, close. Offering safety. Gripping the body that held her close, she clung to him and buried her face into his neck, just breathing him in.
Son of a bitch.
Nothing could ever compare to the sheer terror Jason had felt when he had snapped awake to the sound of Bella’s screams. Reacting instantly, he wound his arms around her flailing body and held tight. The devastating pain he heard being ripped from her was utterly petrifying. Never had he flinched in battle, always a cool steady hand in every combat situation he had been in. None of that shit mattered right now.
Jason was terrified.
Right now Jason was shaking like a leaf in the wind, and he was chilled to the bone. Her pain, her anguish had become his own. The glimpse into her nightmares had destroyed him. Soothing words spilled from his lips. Unknowing what he said, as long as they gave her comfort.
For fuck’s sake, get it together, man.
It was still night. In the darkness, Jason pulled her chilled body against him. Wrapping himself around her, he ran his hands down her back, trying to will her pain away. Bella burrowed into him.
“I’m okay…I’m okay…” she repeated over and over. She was fighting the tears, determined to regain control. Minutes faded as she finally calmed. Deep embarrassment swamped her.
Whispering “I’m sorry,” she tried to pull back, putting a hand on his chest to push away. Muscles flexed beneath her hand, and she found herself trapped underneath the large body of a very pissed-off male.
In the moonlight, she could see his face, fierce and savagely beautiful. “Never, never apologize to me for having a nightmare,” Jason snapped in a cold, commanding voice.
“Umm—”
“I’m not finished.” His voice was as sharp as a knife. “I’ve things to say, and I will bloody well say them now. Never apologize for what that animal did to you. Let me be here for you, damn it. Don’t hide it from me. I will not accept you pulling away from me after that.”
He could hear the words that were spilling from his mouth, but he couldn’t seem to stop. Jesus, was he crazy?
He gulped in a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying to calm his own frantic heartbeat. “Christ, I’m sorry. I’m being an ass again. I dinna mean to snap at you. I don’t deal well with being…scared. Just let me hold you, love. I need to hold you. Please just let me be here for you.”
Bella wound her arms around him as he rolled over to his side, pulling her into his secure embrace. His body was rock solid, pure muscle wasn’t that comfortable to lay on, but the immense warmth of his body helped chase the last of the chill out of her body. His leg trapped hers, and he curled up as if he were trying to shelter her with his very being. Her head rested over his heart, listening to the strong powerful beat calmed her more than anything she had ever known. One of his hands came up to stroke her hair, and the other remained wrapped around her middle like steel, holding her to him.
“Bloody hell that was a bad one, wasn’t it?” He could feel her nod.
Jason held her tight to him, wanting to absorb her into his own body where he could keep her safe. “Don’t ever hide from me, okay? We can get through this together. You just have to let me help you. I handled this badly, but just know I want to be here for you. Love, I need you to let me.”
Bella turned and pressed a kiss directly over his heart. He in turn kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer. The heat of his body seeped in and melted the bitter cold she always felt when coming out of the nightmare. His protective embrace comforted her just like the reassurance given with his words. Time passed as she counted the beats of the strong heart beneath her head.
“Do you hear that?” His voice was soft, a deep rumbling of sound that touched her very soul.
She kissed his chest again. “What, your heart?”
“It beats for you now.”
Touched beyond belief, she felt hot tears slowly trickle out of her eyes to slide down to his chest. Her throat closed up, but she forced herself to give him the only thing back she could think of. “I heard you calling me,” she said softly. “You pulled me back, out of the nightmare. I just had to find you. I heard you, and I knew you would keep me safe. You…you make me feel safe.”
Jason felt his own eyes mist and closed them in defense. Jesus, what was wrong with him? Fuck, he loved her. Those words, so simple, so bravely spoken had torn down the last of his defenses. Bella’s eyes fluttered closed again, words slurring with exhaustion as she burrowed into his heat. “I need you. I hate needing you so much. Hold me until I sleep? Don’t let go, okay?”
“Never,” he vowed, pressing a kiss on the top of her precious head. “I’ll never let go.”

Excerpt #2 from One Shot

Music thumped a steady rhythm like a heartbeat.
The low throb of a Hayabusa motorcycle cut through the night as the rider pulled up in front of the club. The rider coasted the bike a few feet down past the valet stand, then shut it off with a flick of the wrist. A valet rushed forward, reaching out with a ticket in his hand. His eyes glazed over with anticipation as he looked at the bike. At least until he got a good view of the rider.
Then he lost his ability to speak.
Eyes turned from every direction as Tara took off her helmet and shook out her hair. She had on a long black wig, highlighting the China doll look she was going for tonight. Skillfully applied makeup made her look younger than she really was and accentuated her exotic features to a tee. Both the wig and makeup helped hide her real features. The darkness inside the club would also be a plus, helping to dissuade anyone from truly recognizing her.
At least the her she was right now.
She had dressed to be noticed, wanting people’s attention on the whole package she presented instead of why she was there. Dressed to kill in a tight, black strapless corset with red lace covering that had her boobs busting out of the top, tight black leather pants, and black knee-high boots, Tara was a walking wet dream.
Tara had spent the afternoon familiarizing herself with Ricardo Mendez and his organization. Not much was known about this up-and-coming drug lord besides he was pissing off his competition left and right. Tara had spoken to a DEA agent earlier who was an old friend. The DEA agent had given her what she hoped was useful information and she had made sure to dress the part. Ricardo Mendez, it seemed, had a taste for young women with a dominant streak…Asian women in particular.
Well, she’d give him what he wanted.
Tara purposefully arrived early, wanting to scope out the crowd and watch for Mikayla’s arrival. She hooked her helmet onto the bike then turned to the waiting valet, gifting him with a slow smile. “Could you do me a favor…please?” Tara’s voice purred out in with a hint of a Chinese accent.
“A…anything,” the valet stuttered out.
“Would you make sure my bike stays right here? I would worry about him otherwise.”
“Him?”
“Hmm…yes, I call my bike a him. I…ride him after all…don’t I?” She traced a finger seductively over the collar of his shirt, making him gulp.
“Oh yeah,” he whispered reverently. He tried to speak normally, then had to clear his throat before he tried again. “I will watch it…him for you. I will be right here waiting for you when you leave. I mean, it…it will be right here.”
“Thank you”—her eyes drifted down to his nametag—“Dennis.” She leaned in close to press a kiss to his cheek and heard him sigh as she walked away. Tara made her way back toward the entrance of the club with a slow swing of her hips, her steps confident and controlled. Her team was already in place inside and she was ready for the night to begin.
A noise chirped in the earpiece she wore and immediately slowed her step. “This is God to T-rex. Can you hear me?”
Tara smiled to herself as she heard Adrian’s voice in her ear. “God? Sugar, even you are stretching that one.”
Tara heard Rock’s amused reply over the comms. “He’s just pissed that he lost the toss for who gets stuck in the van.”
“Fuck you, asshole,” Adrian replied. “Everyone is in place, T-rex. We’re a go.”
Tara saw her friend Mikayla pull up in front of the club in a flashy red sports car. The valet rushed forward to open the passenger door. “Lynx is here,” Tara murmured, knowing her team would hear her.
Mikayla swung long legs out. Taking the valet’s hand, she allowed him to help her out of the car. She had on a tight green dress with thin straps that stopped just this side of decent. Her thick gold bracelets and chain necklace seemed innocent enough, but Tara knew better. She had seen Mikayla use that gold chain around her neck to garrote someone a few months ago and those bracelets were very handy in a fight.
The gold rings on Mikayla’s fingers might look pretty but Tara knew that with a flick of the stone, a tiny needle would pop out of the band, holding a powerful drug that would take down a two-hundred-pound man in less than three seconds. Tara knew because she had a similar one on her own hand. All the women of IAD shopped together for their jewelry.
Both women were walking arsenals and no one would ever know it.
Time to go to work.
