New York, NY; October 30, 2014 – New American Library, a division of Penguin Random House, announced today that it will publish in hardcover the first book in a new contemporary series from #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward on July 28, 2015.

 

Launching with a novel of the same name, The Bourbon Kings series will introduce readers to the Bradfords, a wealthy, aristocratic family in Kentucky who made their money from bourbon.

 

The books have already been optioned for television by Endemol Studios, the entertainment and production company behind the international hit TV series Big Brother, Deal or No Deal, Wipeout, Hell On Wheels, The Fall and Peaky Blinders, among others.

 

Set in the heart of bourbon and horse country, The Bourbon Kings marks a departure for Ward who hasn’t written extensively about Kentucky, though she lives in The Bluegrass State and has deep ties to the surrounding community.

Both characters are swimming in angst, yet the writing style uses wit and sassiness to keep the storyline light and romantic. While obvious to both of them that they are mated, they both fight the call, feeling it can never be.  Fate, however, has other plans, constantly bringing them back into one another's sphere.  He is running from his past, she is running from her present-together they stand up against the pack Alpha, her father.  While she may be a wolf shifter, Emma is like many women who find society claiming she doesn't have the perfect body and social role.  Rather than conform, she creates her own path.  Roark is smoking hot, but caring around some disabling inner demons.  I was interested in how they supported one another to overcome these images.  How they had to love themselves before the true romance could be possible.  I am interested to see where the storyline moves next.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Emma froze, her face still wearing traces of fear as the door crashed open and Roark burst inside, looking wild and fierce.

“I, umm—” Wow. How was she supposed to form a coherent sentence when her heart still raced and Roark stood before her, tall and beautiful—without a trace of clothing? She tried to keep her eyes north of the, umm, border, but failed miserably. Her earlier view of his naked form had been fantastic. But now…

Yummy, yum, yum, her wolf agreed, the animal smacking her lips in appreciation.

“You need to put some clothes on.” The words came out fast and breathless. A rush of fevered color stained her cheeks at being caught ogling him in the buff. Not that she should feel ashamed in any way. Being unclothed was just the way of the shifter.

But seeing Roark without his clothes wasn’t about shifting. It was about sex. Hot, wild, curl-your-toes and melt-the-snow kind of sex.

He cocked his head to the side as if she’d just spoken in tongues. “Why did you scream?”

“Spider.”

He cast a glance around and Emma could tell he didn’t believe her. The hairy little devil had scurried under the refrigerator. She tried to breathe normally, but it was proving almost impossible since he didn’t seem in any hurry to put on a pair of damn pants. Her pussy was already wet from her earlier ogling. She was so rattled that she stepped back at an awkward angle, putting too much weight on her still healing leg. It buckled beneath her and before she could stop herself, she was whimpering at the stab of pain.

Strong arms shot out, pulling her against the solid wall of his chest. “Are you okay?”

Hell no, she thought. She wanted to lean into him. To feel his arms wrap around her waist and hold her tight. She’d never felt as safe in her life as she did when Roark was around.

Deep within her, her wolf demanded more.

Mate.

The woman pushed the animal back down. She’d kept her wolf well hidden throughout the years, drawing on the animal’s strength only when necessary.

Like now. This man was male. Too male for a woman like her. He was big. Powerful. Made her feel so feminine. Made something deep inside her ache. She stepped carefully away from temptation, ignoring the big wolf completely. Which was difficult as hell since being this close caused her body to hum with need. It was also the last thing she wanted to do. She wanted to step closer, into his warmth. Against his cock.

“Let me see your leg.” The words were a command she wanted so badly to obey. Or any other he might throw her way, especially if it involved naked skin against naked skin.

Naughty wolf, she chided her animal. Naughty, naughty wolf.

“It’s fine.” She stuck her leg out and wiggled it to show him the wound was almost healed. There were still some rough looking marks, probably due to the rusty condition of the trap. The skin had closed and the mark would vanish the next time she shifted.

She gasped when he reached out and picked her up, sitting her on the countertop as if she weighed nothing at all. Mmm, she hummed in appreciation. Shifter strength. Even a big girl like herself could be manhandled by a shifter. She hadn’t bothered to put on any shoes, preferring to go barefoot whenever she could. He raised her injured leg to examine it and she soaked up even this small touch in hungry delight. She felt strangely light-headed and she could feel that pull toward this man deep inside.

“This still looks a little rough.” The calloused pads of his fingers ran over her skin causing goose bumps to shimmer over her body. Roark hadn’t wanted her in his cabin last night but he’d taken better care and shown more consideration of her than her father had in years. Damn it, she didn’t want to find more things about him to love.

A book about two people facing down their demons, and falling in love along the way.  Monica has just recently dealt with her demons and is starting to live her life.  Out with her sister, she meets Victor, a gorgeously handsome Alpha male who rocks her socks.  And she rocks his, too.  However, Victor is still dealing with his demons.  He's upfront and tells her there are no promises but that doesn't stop their desire for one another.  As their relationship grows and he lets her inside, we see some of his demons and how a previous love has damaged him.  Can he move on and choose her over his demons or will he choose to continue to torture himself.  Can she be strong enough for both of them? 

I liked that Monica was already healed at the beginning of the book.  She had a life of her own outside their relationship that gave her strength and purpose beyond their love.  That allowed her to be strong when she needed to be and supportive when he needed it.  It allowed a her feelings to ring true.  She didn't need him in her life--she wanted him, which is very different.  Victor's character can be polarizing.  The author's ability to make us love his tortured soul first allows you the time to listen to  his backstory.  His determination to do the right thing and to be a good man have you rooting for his happiness. 

As her debut novel, there were a few editing errors I would have liked to see cleaned up, but the story line had a good flow that showed both characters' internal conflict and passion.  The decision to pace this out over  several months did the story justice as it felt more natural.  Even if they did fall in bed with lust at first sight.   Lots of hot steamy sex scenes, including a wild out of town weekend.  The novel ends on a HEA and did have me crying at parts.

 Intensity is the word that best describes the way Linc lives his life.  Everything he does and says is done with passion and direction.  Enter one little lost girl, and his desire to protect knocks him off his feet.  While this story is mostly told from Serena's naïve point of view, it is Linc who steals the stage.  His self denial in the name of making Serena feel safe reveals the martyr that he has become.  Each comes with their own tragic back story, and the cast of friends and enemies make a colorful appearance.  Everyone should have a friend like Mylynee. And while he may think he is saving her, Serena saves him right back.  For all her innocence, she is gutsy and independent. The scene of their first intimacy deserves to be nominated for most romantic deflowering.  Heck, Linc can deflower me any day.

He yanked me up from my seat and launched his lips on mine so fast the contact zapped me with a thousand volts. His strokes, bold at first, lightened to soft, tender kisses almost as if he was asking permission to enter—to taste.

The heat from his hands, holding my upper arms, seared me.

My fists clenched and unclenched over and over at my sides.

Touch him? Don’t touch him?

Unable to deny myself, I moved closer, aligning my body with his. My hands gravitated of their own volition, melting to his tight abs and drifting upward, over his chest and up to his neck, where I held on for the ride.

His loud groan rumbled across my breasts, and his firm arms wound around my back, crushing me against him.

For the first time in my life, I surrendered and parted my lips, ready to welcome him in. Instead of tongues diving toward one another, Linc stilled and clamped his mouth shut. As I started to step away, he clenched my hips, holding me in place. He pressed his forehead to mine and slammed his eyes closed.

“I don’t- I’ve always been the sister-type, never like this.  Do you really want this?  I don’t expect anything afterwards, but are you really attracted to me like that?”  She murmured, so unsure of herself.  Her hands landed on my bare chest and glided over my nipple piercings.  The sensitivity was there and I briefly thought about what it would feel like having her luscious lips wrapped around them. 

“Listen to me.  Listen very carefully because you should already know this.  You’re gorgeous, inside and out.  We never saw you as our sister, we all respected you though.  You were the one everyone wanted but never had a chance with.  I could call up any of our surfing friends and they’d agree.  Hell, the girls knew it too.  When one of the guys started working up the nerve to ask you on a date, the others would warn about what would happen if he hurt you.  I guess we all kinda cock blocked you.”  I rub my neck, realizing how we were back then.  “I’m sorry for that.”

 

 

- The birth date on the gravestone is my actual date of birth ;)

- I try to include names from my street team and readers in my books. (Rebecca, Elixix, Tami, Cassia were all from them in Regretfully)

- Tristen got his name from a good friend of mine. She was with me in the beginning of my writing process and her boyfriend’s name was Tristen and I fell in love with the name. 

- I saw Cirque Du Soleil’s Zumanity and one of the performers had his nipples pierced. I was sold and knew Tristen would be getting them. :D

- I was able to relate to Tristen in some ways regarding Cami’s death. A boyfriend of mine was taken from this world too soon and I drew from those memories. 

- Gloria’s is my favorite Latin restaurant and I had to include it in the book. The one I go to is in Dallas though. 

- Aria’s flashback (you’ll know which one I’m talking about, hint- alcohol) was tough for me to write. I spent weeks on it, making sure it was accurate and written in a respectable manner. That’s one scene I don’t go back and reread very much, but it’s often on my mind.

 

 

 

Texas born and raised, I found my love for dirty books rather recently.  I work in real estate for my day job and I write contemporary romance with a twist of suspense and erotica. 

 Sinfully, Regretfully, and Deceitfully can be read in order or as standalones.  Sinfully and Regretfully take place around the same time frame and can even be read in reverse order (will give more background on Payton and Ryder’s story).  Tate’s story, Deceitfully, will finish off the series and will be out in spring of 2015.
