Blaine: "You must be thinking I've gone mad—"

I didn't disagree.

"—I just feel that you should gain a deeper insight into the real philosophy of Albermarle."

I felt the adrenaline begin to tighten the muscles across my chest: I should have guessed that anything that involved my father's endorsement would possess some dark element.

"I operate an exclusive club here on the island, Lilith—one that you're fortunate to experience, and one that could bring you great benefit if you'll allow yourself the freedom."

The light in Blaine's eyes was positively evangelical now and she leaned towards me, one hand resting on my knee to suggest sorority. "I think you're about to find this extremely interesting."

I placed my untouched champagne on the table. "Blaine, I'm tired, confused and more than a little irritated. As I think I made perfectly clear, I don't consider myself to be a guest here. I'm a temporary employee, and perfectly happy to keep it that way." I went to stand. "And I don't play games."

"Then perhaps you should start. You see? There's that anger again. It never quite leaves you, does it? It just stays beneath the surface, driving you ever onward. Though with your past I'm hardly surprised. I'm sure I'd retain a certain fury with the world."

"This isn't a conversation I'm prepared to have right now."

"Lilith darling, I'm on your side here. I think the way you've been treated is appalling, and you have every right to defend yourself." She gave a knowing smile...

"What I want to say is that Albermarle can offer you a greater opportunity for release than most could ever dream. Why don't you come with me? It's for easier to experience than to explain." Blaine stood and reached out her hand to lead me back to the doorway.

No amount of honeyed words could have prepared me for what I saw. My earlier comment about dungeons was no longer funny, because that was exactly what Blaine Albermarle had constructed in the cellars of her warped fairytale home, complete with bare stone walls, a rack holding a selection whips and implements I didn't want to take a guess at, and a colossal bed that dominated the far end of the chamber

A massive black wooden Saint Andrew's cross was bolted to the opposite wall, and from its beautifully polished leather cuffs, forehead pressed to harsh stone and entirely naked, hung Finn."

Before I could run, Blaine stepped between me and the door. In her hand she held a heavy, hand-stitched crop. "Imagine, Lilith. Imagine what it's like to live out any fantasy you've ever had without fear or censure of discovery. He can be whoever you want him to be, and you can do whatever you like to him."

I could say nothing at all, and Blaine took this as permission to continue. "Try it." She pressed the crop into my hand. "You've been a very bad boy, haven't you, Finn? I'm sure Lilith is capable of teaching you an important lesson."

He slowly turned to face me, so his head was forced to one side of the smooth wood. The huge eyes that had sparked with a life beyond this place were dull and dilated. "I'm sorry, I really can't do this," I managed to whisper.

Blaine eased the whip from my clenched fingers. "First time nerves. Don't worry, you'll soon get the technique with those talented hands of yours. Let me show you." She raised the crop and brought it down with all her strength across Finn's exposed shoulders and I knew that this was no consensual role-play...

Lilith: "He doesn't want to be here, Blaine. I could see that the moment I met him. And as for last night…"

Blaine: "Ah, that. If it's any consolation, Finn gave his full consent to be here, and I have the contract to prove it. He may not enjoy everything that's asked of him, but that's the major draw. My clients are those who've grown tired of actors who merely posture their discomfort; I can offer them someone to play with who genuinely doesn't want to play along. Once you've had this experience, there's no going back to 'let's pretend.'"

I truly wish there were more stars to give than 5. As the blurb indicates, this is a very dark, very disturbing book and it most definitely is! Read it when you are in a good place emotionally (always remembering it is fiction).

Lilith is a terrific, compassionate character. A bit of a wild child but once she gets to Albermarle Hall, she is rather quickly initiated into a dark, depraved world - one she never fathom existed. But she never loses who she is. She is amazingly strong, and completely non-judgmental when it comes to Finn, our other main character. She bucks the system and Blaine at every turn, which is fun to read. I truly adored her character and was rooting always for her to win.

Finn is a super complicated character. He largely grew up abused and uses drugs and alcohol to dull himself out so he isn't aware of what is always happening to him. But he is taken with Lili from the very beginning. He is a slave to Blaine and she uses him as currency, selling him to the highest bidder for whatever depravity they want to subject him to. But he has a heart of gold. Despite his despair throughout a lot of the book, he doesn't lose hope.

Blaine is the sadistic, mastermind behind the entire thing and the lady over Albermarle hall. She uses people's darkest desires to gain control over them. I truly hated her, which is what makes her such a well written character. Not often you despise a book character so much that you swear at them out loud but I did it more than once.

There are many other wonderfully complex characters. Henry and Gabriel and Nate as well as those in the depraved group but they are each well written, designed to be loved or hated in turn.

I started the book on a business trip and stayed up until all hours and rose early several days because I just couldn't put it down. I cried more than one time and cursed quite often too. As hard as the brutality is a large part of the time, the tender moments are so well done that they often broke my heart.

This is the first book and from what I understand, there will be another. I read a few reviews the complained about the ending but they may not have known there would be another book.

Be warned that this book truly is dark and twisted but well worth the read. It isn't for the faint at heart.

July Spotlight Author and BoTM: Sherri Hayes' Finding Anna series

Every few months, on the discussion forum, we spotlight an author and do a book club reading of the his/her book(s).  We are excited to announce we will be placing Sherri Hayes in the Spotlight in July to look at her series Finding Anna, published at The Writers Coffee Shop. www.InnerGoddess.freeforums.org

I first met Sherri at the Texas Book Festival in October 2012.  A sixteen-year-old book festival, it was hosting an erotica symposium for the first time.  Under a big white tent, the cover of SLAVE caught my eye.  I enjoyed talking to Sherri very much and took my signed copy home to read.  I absolutely loved it!  I raved to all my friends. TinkNCognito also fell in love. Then book 2 came out, NEED, which was even better than the first one.  I had an instant new book boyfriend in Stephan.  And I can't wait for book 3 TRUTH to be released in July.

The premise:  

Brianna has been kidnapped (possibly sold) into sexual slavery.  Stephan, a rich philanthropist, rescues her.  However she is unable to function the simplest of tasks without orders from her Master.  Being a Dominant, Stephan steps into the role to provide her consistency and routine, a safe existence to relearn her own sense of self.   As the series continues, Brianna finds herself as Stephan finds out how she came to be in such a horrid existence. While he keeps sex off his agenda to gain her trust, the series is full of intimate scenes and sexual tension.

The author: 

 Sherri Hayes is the author of two series, erotic/romance Finding Anna and mystery/romance A Daniels Brothers (Behind Closed Doors and Red Zone), and the romance novel Hidden Threat.  Her
