Sherri Hayes - Sensual Romance with Heart

Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.

At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.

Eight years later, Sherri is the author of nine full-length novels, and two short stories. Writing has become a creative outlet that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. You can find a current list of all of Sherri’s books and sign up for her monthly newsletter at www.sherrihayesauthor.com

Trust (Finding Anna, Book 4)

Brianna is lost for the fourth time in her life. Each time was unexpected, and each changed the course of her future. The first life-altering event occurred when her mother died, and she moved to Minnesota to live with her father.

The second was when she was kidnapped at the age of seventeen and forced to be a slave. She would never forget those ten months. Brianna thought her life was over.

Everything changed again the day Stephan steamrolled into her life and brought her home to live with him. She had no idea what to expect—what life with her new Master would hold. That first month with Stephan was, in some ways, more confusing than the prior ten. As a slave, she’d known her place. With Stephan everything was new and different. He’d given her freedom and so much more.

Five months after Stephan rescued her, Brianna once again finds her life flipped upside down.

In this fourth, and final, installment of Finding Anna, Brianna must unearth strength she never knew she possessed. Stephan can no longer protect her from the outside world. She must learn to trust herself, embrace who she is, and discover who she wants to be. Only by facing her demons can Brianna find true happiness and peace.

Research for this book

Over the last few years since I’ve been writing fiction, I’ve done a fair amount of research—none more so than what I did for Burning For Her Kiss.

After sending a handful of chapters to my beta reader, we realized that since my hero, Drew, was a captain in the St. Louis Fire Department and not just a generic firefighter that I was going to need to do some detailed research. I needed to know what the life of a firefighter in St. Louis was like.

We started by looking at the official website. To be honest, there wasn’t that much there. At least, not the kind of information we were looking for.

The next step was to call their headquarters and try to talk to someone. It took a few calls and I was transferred several times before getting forwarded to a voicemail. I left a message and waited. One evening, I was on my way home from shopping when my cell phone rang. I answered it and was surprised to realize that it was the St. Louis Fire Department calling me back. Our conversation was brief, but he told me he was going to forward my contact information to another captain in the department. He said that Captain Mosby did a little acting on the side and would get a kick out of this kind of thing.

A few weeks later, I received another phone call. This time it was from Captain Mosby. Over the next six months or so, he and I spoke off and on. He helped me to get a feel for what it was like to be a captain in the St. Louis Fire Department, what their day and duties were like, and even what they do in their downtime. During our last phone call, he told me that when he’d taken his new position, as PR rep for the department, he had no idea how many different things he’d get to experience.

Review by TinkNCognito

I want to start by saying I am a HUGE fan of Sherri Hayes. Her writing speaks to me whether is it Brianna and Stephan in the Finding Anna series or all her boys in the Daniel Brothers series so I had high expectations for this book. And I adored the prequel, Welcome to Serpent's Kiss, so I was very anxious to see where she took the series. Man oh man, she didn't disappoint.

Drew is a firefighter and new to the BDSM world. He has to be in control for his profession, and craves the release of submission to tune out and turn off. Now he needs to find the right Mistress.

Beth is a Domme who has been badly hurt - betrayal in one of it's worst forms. She isn't looking for a new sub, and feels she may never be ready for a new relationship. Thank heavens for her best friend Nicole, who is pushing her back to the club-Serpent's Kiss.

Drew is drawn to Beth from the start. He knows she has been hurt but works to build her trust and get past her defenses. Beth is drawn to Drew but wants to protect her heart.

The story develops naturally and organically - Drew gaining her trust and Beth opening up. They start as friends and work from there. The chemistry is palpable and wonderful to read. As a reader, I could literally feel it coming off the page.

But the question was - would Beth get past her hurt to let him in? As I enjoyed the story, I was rooting for Beth and Drew to find a way to be together. They are both strong characters and I really loved that about the story. The auxiliary characters - Nicole, Tommy, Ben, and others were all well developed, which isn't always the case with minor characters. The scenes from the firehouse were fun, funny, interesting and felt very real. I just found the book hard to put down.

Now that I am done, I just want more of these characters! I am glad this series is in its infancy as I know I have more books to look forward to. I give this one 5 stars!!!

Interview with Sherri Hayes
Where did you get your desire to write? I’ve always had stories in my head, but I didn’t begin writing my stories down until about eight years ago. Now, if I go more than a week or two without writing, the stories tend to take over most of my thought process. Writing them down gets them out of my head so I can think of other things.
What is the creative process like for you? My creative process is pretty basic. I get an idea for a story and I sit down and write. That’s it. I don’t plot out my stories and most of the time, I don’t even know what’s going to happen in the next scene until I write it. All my writing is done by the seat of my pants as it were.
Which are your favorite characters? Until I started writing my new Serpent’s Kiss series, I would have had to say Stephan and Brianna. They are still, and probably always will hold a special place in my heart; however, Katrina and Ryan have me itching to write their story. Too bad there are a couple of books that have to happen in-between first.
If you could change anything about any of your books, what would it be? I would like to go back and expand Chris and Elizabeth’s story. Behind Closed Doors was written in only three months. Most of my other books have taken me four to six months to write. I was under a deadline and while I still enjoy their story, I would have liked to have given them a bit more.
You have written the awesome Finding Anna series, and my favorite Daniels brothers, but Serpent's Kiss is a bit more graphic. What inspired the departure? I try to write each book so that it is true to the characters in the story. When I got the idea for a series that would center around the members of a BDSM club, I knew it would fall into the erotic side of romance. The reason Finding Anna only skimmed the surface was due to Brianna’s trauma. So far, we haven’t met any characters in this new series where that is a factor.

Where do you see taking Serpent's Kiss? How many books do you have planned and will there be any overlap with other characters we know and love?

The way I am writing Serpent’s Kiss, the series will be open-ended, so it has the potential to go on indefinitely. I currently have five books planned where I know who both the hero and heroine will be. And yes, you may see a cameo appearance from Stephan and/or Brianna from my Finding Anna Series in one of the books.

Off book topic - what is your favorite food? What about your favorite place you have visited either as a writer or otherwise?

My favorite food would have to be pizza. There are just so many ways to mix it up and make it different, yet the same. About ten years ago, my husband and I took a cruise that had a stop on the island of St. Thomas. I loved it. There is something about being near water that I love and the water there was so clear and blue. It was gorgeous. We both agreed that we’d like to go back one of these days.

What is the best and worst thing about being an author?

The best thing, hands down, is getting to interact with readers. There is nothing like meeting someone who loves your characters as much as you do. As for the worst thing about being an author, that would probably be the challenge that is marketing. Most authors would love to spend all of their time writing and interacting with the characters in their head. Marketing, however, is a business and characters in your head who like to bug you to get busy writing don’t always understand that.

How has eBooks and self-publishing changed the way your write or has it?

On a drive up to northern Ohio with another author, we had a conversation about this topic. When it comes down to it, people read differently on an eReader than they do with a physical book. One of the big differences seems to be that while most people don’t mind long chapters when reading a physical book, e-readers prefer smaller chapters that can be read while on the go. I’m lucky in that my natural writing style leans more toward shorter chapters.

Do you have any other series planned?

Not at the moment. Right now, I’m concentrating on getting Serpent’s Kiss started, and then I’ll be finishing my Daniels Brothers Series. Once that’s wrapped up, I’ll  begin looking at where to go from there.
