Willem
The Witches of Wimberley
Book One
Victoria Danann

Genre: paranormal romance

Number of pages: 265
Word Count: 64,000

Cover Artist: Victoria Danann

Book Description:

Willem is an out of work actor. He gave himself ten years to make it and never got a single paying job. While waiting for what would probably be his last audition ever, the guy standing behind him in line gave him a card with a phone number and said, “If you’re definitely quitting, try the witches.”

He took the card for the sake of being polite and planned to throw it away. But he didn’t throw it away. He called the number, entered the annual competition to win a witch, and won. To his amazement, he got everything he’d ever wanted from life, but in the end would have to make a choice. What’s more important? Being happy or being free of commitment?

Excerpt:

“Lyra, this is Willem.”

“Oh, yes. Willem. Are you having fun?”

“I, ah, yes. I just got here.”

“Have you had something to eat? We wouldn’t want you to be hungry and there’s so much food!”

“I’ll never forget the food.”

She barked out a laugh. “You hope!”

It took me a second to catch up and remember about the memory wipe thing.

“Well, yeah, I guess I do hope I remember.”

Her grin resolved into a smile. “So tell me what you’re going to do with your life if you win, Willem.”

“You know, that still sounds like one of those what-would-you-do-if-you-got-a-million-dollars questions. It feels too unreal to take seriously.”

She nodded. “A good solid honest answer. I like that.” After studying me for a few seconds, she said, “Okay. You passed my test. Let me introduce you to Lilith.”

She turned me around when she took my arm and, as she did, I happened to catch a heated look exchanged between Harmony and Raider. It was an, “Ah hah,” moment immediately followed by an, “Oh, crap,” moment when I realized that, if I won Harmony’s sister, Raider would be my brother-in-law. I understood why he was happy enough to star in the Orientation video and babysit inexperienced canoers on the river. She was a catch and he knew it.

I decided there are worse things than being in Raider’s family. He didn’t actually finish drowning me in the river, but at the time it felt like he was trying. On the other hand, he insisted on showing me to the ballroom. And he called me ‘hero’. Who couldn’t get used to that?

I was ushered from one beautiful woman to the next and each took measure of me in her own way. It was an interview, or audition, but it was the most pleasant I’d ever experienced. Or ever would, I was sure.

Still, after an hour or so, I was getting hungry. When Bless tried to walk me to another chat, I balked.

“Hey, could you maybe give me a couple of minutes to partake of some of the amazing feast stations? I haven’t eaten and that guy in the other part of the house carving that prime rib really spoke to me.”

Bless had a laugh that didn’t exactly sound like tinkling bells, but reminded me of them just the same. “Certainly, Willem. Would you like me to accompany you?”

“That would be…” I happened to look away and notice that most of the conversational groups in the room consisted of clusters of contestants, not a witch in sight. I realized that’s what I’d been seeing the whole time whenever I looked away from the woman I was talking with. “Bless, I hope this isn’t an inappropriate question, but am I getting special treatment?”

Bless treated me to an extra big helping of her tinkling bells laugh. “Willem, you’re quite perceptive. And you’ve passed my test.”

“You know, you’re the sixth or seventh person to say that to me. Is this a gauntlet of gorgeous women in sexy red dresses?”

Again the laugh. “I love that description. You’re quite a character, Willem. You would fit in around here.” As she smiled at me, she grabbed the elbow of another beauty passing by. “Glory, this is Willem.”

When Glory smiled, I knew how she was named. “Hi, Willem.”

“He’s hungry and headed in the direction of prime rib.”

“Of course he is. I don’t see a man like this eating watercress.”

“Yes, well, perhaps you’d like to accompany him while he dines.”

Glory seemed as ecstatic as if she’d won the prize herself. “Of course! Willem. I’d be honored.”

She slipped her arm in mind and walked me to the prime rib. “What would you like with that?” she asked. “While Raleigh is slicing your rib just the way you want it, I’ll gather up something to go with.”

“You sure?”

“Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”

“Okay, then. Caesar salad. And did I see au gratin potatoes?” She nodded. “That should do.”

She pointed to a table at the rear of the room. “I’ll meet you right there.”

She was there with salad and spuds before I arrived with a hunk of prime rib that smelled so good it was all I could do to not face plant into the plate and tear into it with my teeth. Somehow I managed to preserve enough dignity to sit and take a few bites of salad before digging into my current reason for living with fork and knife.

Out of nowhere a waiter appeared on my right pouring red wine into my glass. That was followed with a delivery of ice water seconds later.

“You’ve eaten?” I asked Glory, who sat smiling with her legs crossed as if there’s nothing in the universe she’d rather be doing than watching me eat.

“Much earlier.”

Someone appeared with a mint garnished drink that I hadn’t heard Glory order.

“I’ve decided that Wimberley must have the best service in the world. I’m certain the queen of England is envious.”

She smiled. “Don’t you know you get what you pay for, Willem?”

“So I’ve heard. I’m just a middle class boy from Alabama so I wouldn’t have much personal experience in that department.”

“You don’t strike me as someone who thinks of Golden Bull Buffet as a special occasion.”

“I had some nice times courtesy of my agent.”

“Your agent? Oh, that’s right. You were an actor.”

“How is it that everyone seems to know me by name? And, obviously, some know more than just my name. Have you memorized bios on all fifty contestants? And come to think of it, why did you say ‘were an actor’?”

“First, yes. We look over incoming guests. Second, some of us just learn names, some of us read more and have good recall. Third, you told our people in L.A. that you’re done with acting. That puts it in the past tense, right?”

“Right. So, should I be asking questions about you?”

She grinned. “You’re funny, Willem.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because you have been asking questions.”

Hearing her say it out loud, I realized that was true.

“This prime rib is indescribable. And the wine, he didn’t ask me for a preference, but I’ve gotta tell you. It’s amazing.”

“If you win, you’ll eat whatever you want when you want it. As far as the staff goes, they’re very skilled at reading people and anticipating needs.”

“Or desires.”

“You’re quick, Willem. I like that. And you’ve passed my test.”

EXCERPT

Slipping down the stairs, she hoped she did not run into anybody between her room and Jade’s. She didn’t think she could stand any comments from her mother about her choice of sleeping attire. Another thing she felt thankful for was the location of the room they would be sleeping in. Thankfully, they were on a different floor and at opposite end of the house from where the rest of the family slept.

She hesitated at the door. Her nerves were on edge and her body was tingling, readying itself for his possession. Already, her breasts were swelling and both nipples were as hard as rocks. She couldn’t wait to be in his arms again. Taking the doorknob in her hand, she held it for a moment and then slowly opened the door. When she entered the room, Jade waited, already in the bed. Leaning back against the headboard, propped up by two or three soft pillows, he looked like a dream. With no shirt on, the soft light of the lamp accentuated his broad shoulders and golden skin. After finding out he had a Cherokee grandparent, the color and smoothness of his skin made sense. He held the covers back and patted the mattress in invitation.

Crossing to the bed, she removed her robe and swiftly crawled under the covers. He eased down in the bed and turned on his side and facing her. “You are so beautiful, Arabella.”

She lowered her eyes, unable to breathe if she continued to share his gaze. His eyes were looking into her very soul. “No, you are beautiful, Jade. I have never known anyone who makes me feel the way you do.”

“How many men am I competing with, sweetheart?” he asked in a soft, gentle tone.

“What do you mean?”

“How many men are you dating? I’m sure there is a whole slew of them just beating your door down, all wanting the privilege of your company.”

“There is no one.” Now that the truth would be revealed, he probably wouldn’t be as interested in her.

“No one?”
“I’m sorry, Jade. I don’t have very much experience with men.” Her voice shook slightly and she closed her eyes waiting for his reaction. How could she tell him the local boys had all been afraid of her, or at least afraid of the ridicule they would endure by dating the town witch?

Light, soft, sweet kisses began raining on her eyes and her cheeks. “Why are you sorry, Bella? Don’t you know how exciting it is for a man to find out his woman hasn’t known many other men?”

“Not exactly what I meant,” Arabella stammered. God, this was hard.

“Quit worrying, Arabella,” Jade assured her. “The other men are history. You’re here with me now.”

“No, Jade.” She grabbed the hand caressing her neck and lightly playing over the top of her full breasts. He wasn’t making this easy. “The only man I have ever made love to is you—in our dreams.” She waited for his reaction. What if he didn’t want a twenty-four year-old virgin?

* * * *

The next second, he pulled her to him and wrapped both arms securely around her. “You are the sweetest thing. Don’t you understand how this makes me feel? To find out the sexiest, most responsive, most luscious woman I have ever known has never felt the touch of another man? You are mine! You belong to me!” Jade kissed her deeply. His tongue mated with hers. The taste of her lips intoxicated him. He could feel his erection growing stronger and stronger and he wanted to shout for joy! He’d prayed he would regain the full use of his manhood, but he had enough sense to know there were thousands of nerve endings, which all had to work perfectly between his brain and his penis. Last night, when he had lain with Arabella, the brain had been willing but the flesh had been weak. Now, there was absolutely no doubt. He had a raging hard-on. He tore his mouth from hers and laid his head on her shoulder. He had to slow down or he would come and their lovemaking session would be over faster than he wanted.

The doctor had also cautioned him about overusing his back. He’d said the movements and stress of penetration were not wise as of yet. He’d told Jade to wait and see if he could even have an erection, before they crossed the next bridge. Well, that particular question had been answered.

Arabella misinterpreted his change of pace. She pulled back slightly. “Did I do something wrong?” she whispered.

“Baby, oh baby—everything about you is just right. I want you so badly. The doctor said I had to take it slow, but I am about to burst. I’ll be all right in a moment.” His breathing sounded harsh.

“May I, Jade?” Arabella pressed on his shoulder until he laid down flat. “I may not kiss you just right, but I’d like to try.”

He groaned in anticipation. She nipped his shoulder lightly and softly. She spread a light trail of hot kisses over his pectoral muscles, and then down the sculpted washboard of his abs, which were trembling and jerking with the knowledge of what was to come. Arabella pushed the covers down to his knees. He wore nothing underneath and his erection stood tall and engorged—straight as an arrow and vibrating with the sheer fervor of his carnal appetite.

“You are magnificent!” she whispered. With trembling hesitancy, she wrapped one small, warm hand around his thick shaft, as far as she could reach. God, it felt good! Jade thought he would explode before she even got started. Her hair brushed his loins and the anticipation of her lips on his sex was driving him mad. He refused to rush her, but the wait for her lips caused every fiber of his body to stand at complete attention. Ah, she lowered her head and her mouth touched him. He almost levitated off the bed with the pure pleasure of the feel of her lips and tongue on his body.

About SPELLBOUND:

Let Sleeping Warlocks Lie…
Iain MacGregor knows how his warlock family feels about outsiders discovering the truth of their powers, it's forbidden. That doesn’t seem to stop him from having accidental magickal discharges whenever he’s around the woman who has captured his attention. Apparently his magick and other “parts” don’t seem to care what the rules are, or that the object of his affection just might be his undoing.
Warning: Contains yummy, hot, mischievous MacGregor boys who may or may not be wearing clothing and who are almost certainly up to no good on their quest to find true love.

Review by pearls

Michelle Pillow creates great paranormal alpha males who are still quite human in their relationships.  The women are independent and create a balanced partnership.  Whether it's aliens, ghosts or warlocks, you will fall in love; and the sexy scenes will heat up your foggy nights.  At first I was a little disoriented: Magic, ghost, time travel--which was up?  But as the story unfolded, it all made sense.  And there's lots more MacGregors still to come--yummy!

Excerpt:
Jane meets Iain’s family.

“Iain MacGregor,” she whispered longingly, looking up. The woods were quiet. Strips of moonlight shone through tree limbs that reached like surreal black fingertips across her vision. A single tear slid down her cheek. She touched her mouth, imagining his kiss.

Taking a small pocket knife out of her cargo pants, she looked about. A mystic had once told her that if she left pieces of herself around while she lived, it would expand her haunting territory when she died. Jane wasn’t sure she believed in sideshow magic tricks—or the Old Magick as the mystic had spelled it on her sign. She had no idea what had possessed her to talk to the palm reader and ask about ghosts. Still, just in case, she was leaving her stamp all over the woods.

She cut her palm and pressed it to a nearby tree under a branch. Holding the wound to the rough bark stung at first, but then it made her feel better. This forest wouldn’t be a bad eternity.

The sound of running feet erupted behind her and she stiffened. No one ever came out here at night. She’d walked the woods hundreds of times. Her mind instantly went to the creepy girl ghosts chanting by the stream.

“Whoohoo!”

Jane whipped around, startled as a streak of naked flesh sprinted past her. The Scottish voice was met with loud cheers from those who followed him. “Water’s this way, lads, or my name isn’t Raibeart MacGregor, King of the Highlands!”

Another naked man dashed through the forest after him. “It smells of freedom.”

Jane stayed hidden in the branches, undetected, with her hand pressed to the bark.

“Aye, freedom from your proper Cait,” Raibeart answered, his voice coming through the dark where he’d disappeared into the trees.

“Murdoch, stop him before he reaches town. Cait will not teleport ya out of jail again,” a third man yelled, not running quite so fast. “Raibeart, ya are goin’ the wrong way!”

“Och, Angus, my Cait canna live without me,” Murdoch, the second streaker, answered. “She’ll always come to my rescue.”

“I said stop him, Murdoch, we’re new to this place.” Angus skidded to a stop and lifted his jaw, as if sensing he was being watched. He looked in her direction and instantly covered his manhood as his eyes caught Jane’s shocked face in the tree limbs. “Oh, lassie.”

“Oh, naked man,” Jane teased before she could stop herself.

“That I am,” Angus answered, “but there is an explanation for it.”

“I don’t think some things need explained,” Jane said.
