Excerpt

I am completely overwhelmed. My core is on fire and I want so much to kiss him, to touch him. I feel sparks of electricity shoot through every fiber in my body and every nerve ending is screaming for release. I want his hands on me, all over me.

“Amare?”

I put my hands on his chest and push him away. He’s too close, making it hard to form a single thought. I take two steps to the side to put some distance between us so I can speak like a human, not a lust induced zombie. “Yes, they towed my car and it’s in their lot. I haven’t really spoken to them about it yet. I kind of fell asleep on them…”

His face clouds over and he says, “You kind of fell asleep on them? What. Does. That. Mean?” He pauses between each word and growls them at me.

“Jonas took me to see Doc Jordan and he gave me something for the pain, but because I hadn’t slept in days it made me sleepy. I think he ended up carrying me to their clubhouse.” I realize how all this must sound. If someone told me that exact same story, I would be thinking the worst.

“Did they touch you, Amare?” he growls at me, his eyes blazing with anger.

“No, no, no! In fact, Jonas put a guard on my door so no one would go near me. Not that they would. I was safe, Sal.” Something crosses his face and he stares at me so intently that I look away and stare at the floor. He moves back into my space and lifts my head up. “Thank you for getting me coffee. Let’s go have breakfast and I’m buying. I think I shall keep you in my sights to make sure nothing else happens to you. I have never met a woman who allows herself to get into so many dangerous situations, in such a short space in time. You, my Amare, are a handful.” He moves away from me and does up his shirt, then grabs his jacket. He opens the door to his room and extends his arm. “Shall we?” he asks, offering me a smile that reveals his dimple. My core clenches again and I have to fight the urge to throw myself at him.

Guarding from every danger but passion itself

DEAREST ROGUE
A Maiden Lane Novel
by Elizabeth Hoyt
a Historical Romance
from Grand Central Publishing

HE CAN GUARD HER
Lady Phoebe Batten is pretty, vivacious, and yearning for a social life befitting the sister of a powerful duke. But because she is almost completely blind, her overprotective brother insists that she have an armed bodyguard by her side at all times-the very irritating Captain Trevillion.

FROM EVERY DANGER
Captain James Trevillion is proud, brooding, and cursed with a leg injury from his service in the King's dragoons. Yet he can still shoot and ride like the devil, so watching over the distracting Lady Phoebe should be no problem at all-until she's targeted by kidnappers.

BUT PASSION ITSELF
Caught in a deadly web of deceit, James must risk life and limb to save his charge from the lowest of cads-one who would force Lady Phoebe into a loveless marriage. But while they're confined to close quarters for her safekeeping, Phoebe begins to see the tender man beneath the soldier's hard exterior . . . and the possibility of a life-and love-she never imagined possible.

Review by pearls
The Maiden Lane series is quickly becoming one of my favorite historical romance series.  With it's strong independent female characters and glimpses into the darker parts of London society, there is always a sense of adventure.  This newest installment Dearest Rogue did not disappoint me.  Both main characters are disabled, but striving to live a full life.  Both are strong individual heroes on their own account.  Together, they make a strong team who see one another's strengths, not weaknesses, supporting each other against what life throws at them.  Previous characters are brought back, but first time readers will not feel lost thanks to well-woven descriptions.  Adventure and Action pace the plot, while still stopping to take the time to smell the roses.  I love the imagery and symbolism provided by the roses in the book.  This may be my favorite of the series so far.

EXCERPT

He cleared his throat. “Malcolm MacLeish is young and handsome—”
“A fat lot of good that does me, since I can’t see him.”
“— a gentleman of high spirits and quick wit and seemingly smitten with you as well.”
There was a silence.
“Smitten,” Phoebe said at last. “Smit-ten. The word sounds like a skin disease if you think about it too much.”
“He smiles every time he sees you,” he murmured quietly. Was he jealous?
“I smile every time I smell cherry pie.”
“You’re being ridiculous,” Trevillion said disapprovingly. “I don’t see why you’ve rejected him out of hand.”
“You sound like a querulous old aunt, scolding children for running through the house.”
“I am older than you,” he replied stiffly, “as I’ve pointed out on numerous occasions.”
A terrible thought struck her. “Are you shoving me at Mr. MacLeish because I kissed you?”
“I—”
“It was my very first kiss, you ought to know,” she said very rapidly, because sometimes it was just better to say the embarrassing thing and get it over with. “I’m sure I’ll improve with practice. In fact, I’m sure of it. Almost everything improves with practice, don’t you think? And really, if I had a just a bit of help from your end next time—”
I am not kissing you,” he said with the awful finality of a judge pronouncing a death sentence.
“Why not?”
“You know very well why not.”
“Nooo,” she said slowly, thinking it over. “No, I can’t say that I do, really. I mean I know why you think we oughtn’t kiss again: you’re as old as the Thames, you’re below me in rank, I’m too young and frivolous, and you much too serious, et cetera, et cetera, and et cetera, but frankly I don’t have any reasons not to kiss you.” She stopped for breath and to think and amended her statement. “Unless, of course, you’re either (a) a murderer running from the law or (b) hiding a secret wife. Are you?”
“I . . . what?”
“Are you,” she repeated patiently, “either a murderer running from the law or hiding a secret wife?”
“You know I’m not,” he said with impatience. It was a good thing she was so stubborn, because that tone might have put off many another young girl. “Phoebe—”
“So then there’s no reason at all not to kiss me again.” She folded her hands in her lap and smiled.

SHUTTERGIRL FINAL.jpg

Blurb

ONE movie star on the cusp of greatness

ONE broken girl who touched him

TEN years to forget her

A MILLION stories in Hollywood

I am not hurt.

I don’t need a second chance with him, or a life I thought I had.

While he was out forgetting me to become a movie star, I was building a career out of nothing. A career as a paparazzi, but a career. For a foster kid who bounced around every home in Los Angeles, that wasn’t easy.

This camera is all I have.

He’s nothing to me. Every time I take his picture and sell it, I remind myself that I did it all without him or his approval, his cinnamon smell or his clear green eyes. He lights up the screen like a celestial body, but he’s nothing but a paycheck to me.

He can throw my camera off a balcony, and nothing has to change. We can stay king and queen of the same city, and different worlds.

Except this is Hollywood, and here, anything can happen.

Excerpt #1

I stroked his hair, waist deep in peace, all worry gone for the moment, and floating in no more than an ocean of gratitude. I must have been more vulnerable than I realized, or he’d reopened some wound with his kindness, because though my sweet reverie stayed, as the minutes passed, a layer of need fitted itself on top of it.
I needed to tell him, if not the details, the outlines of who I was.
“I want you to know,” I whispered, starting somewhere small, then everything I didn’t want to say spilled out. “I have stuff. I’ve never been to jail, but you know, it’s stuff, and it’s ugly, and it scares me. Because, I mean, you’re so perfect, and I’m… I’m just a mess. I’m not whole. I’m a bunch of pieces of a person I cobbled together.” My eyes got wet when I thought of the comparisons between us and that picture in my silverware drawer. “So if you have to move on when you realize that, I’ll understand. You have an image, and if anyone understands protecting a career, it’s me. I mean, I’ll be mad, don’t get that wrong, but also.” I swallowed and blinked, shifting my head so he wouldn’t feel the tear on his forehead. “I won’t blame you.”
I waited for an answer. Anything. A change in position or a word on any subject. The weather. Sports. Something. But all he did was breathe.
I smiled so wide, tears fell into my mouth. He was sleeping.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
CD Reiss
cd reiss new bio.jpg

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Whether it's helping fix up the old cottage she just bought on Cherry Lane or working together on a pro bono legal case, he can't help feeling a little protective. EXCERPT
He gave her a long, penetrating stare.  “How are you enjoying the Low country?”
              “I really like it.”
“Better than New York City?” he teased.

She knew what he was alluding to.  Would she join him at his new firm in Haven Creek?  Although tempting, she wasn’t sure she was ready to work someone else’s firm after being independent for so long.  “Let’s just say it has a few advantages over the Big Apple.”

David gave her a questioning look.  “Only a few, Devon?”  She smiled, bringing his gaze to linger on her parted lips.  “Maybe we can discuss the merits of the Big Apple and the Holy City at another time.”  He blinked slowly.  “Do you have anything planned for this Sunday?  A bunch of us are getting together at my place to watch the March Madness games.”

Her smile was dazzling.  March Madness always found her in her local sports bar with the neighborhood regulars rooting for their favorite college basketball teams.
“Are you certain I won’t be viewed as an interloper?”

David shook his head.  “Of course not.  Keaton and Red are coming along with Morgan and Nate.  Jeff hasn’t committed because he may have to work Sunday.  Even if he can’t switch his shift with one of his deputies, Kara said she’s coming if only for a couple of hours.”

Devon’s association with Francine, Morgan and Kara was still too new for her to think of them as girlfriends even though she’d thoroughly enjoyed interacting with them Friday night.  “If that’s the case, then count me in.  I’m going to need your address.”
He held out his hand.  “Grab your phone and I’ll program in my address, cell, and home numbers.  I’ll also need your number so I can get in touch with you.”

Devon retrieved her phone from the tote in her car, handed it to David.  He gave her his and they quickly entered their personal information.  She studied the address when he returned her phone.  He lived in Charleston’s Historic District.  “What time should I come?”
          “Any time after noon.”

“Do you need for me to bring anything?”

A hint of a smile softened David’s mouth.  “Yes.  You,” he said after a pause.

Devon detected a trace of laughter in his voice.  “Other than me, there has to be something else you’ll need.”

Crossing his arms over his chest, he cradled his chin on his left fist, his smile was now as intimate as a kiss.  “No, there isn’t.”

“Look, David, I was raised never to go to someone’s house empty-handed, so I’m going to being a little something that I’m certain the others will enjoy.”
        “You cook?” he teased, smiling.

She narrowed her eyes at him.  “Very funny.  Why would you think I didn’t know how to cook?”

He lifted his shoulders under his suit jacket.  “I just thought most young women nowadays prefer making reservations to cooking.”
Devon flashed a sexy moue.  “You can’t lump me into that category because I can cook.  And quite well,” she added, blowing him a kiss.

His smile grew wider.  “It sounds if the beautiful lady has issued a challenge – one I’m willing to accept.  I’ll concede to you bringing something.”
She inclined her head.  “Thank you.  I’ll probably have to come over at least a half hour earlier than the others to heat it up.”

“Come anytime you want.  I’ll be home.”

Devon glanced at the time on her cellphone.  She had less than fifteen minutes to get to Jack’s Fish House.  “I have to go or I’ll be late for a luncheon meeting.  I’ll see you Sunday before noon.”
David moved forward, opening the door for her.  Once she got settled in, he leaned down into the open window, he winked at her.  “I can’t wait to taste your dish.”

“I promise you won’t be disappointed,” she countered.  There were several dishes she’d perfected and she had to decide which one she would bring.  Fortunately, she had several days before reaching a decision.
            “Thank you, Devon.”

She returned his smile.  “You’re welcome, David.”

Devon backed out of the lot, taking furtive glances up at the rearview mirror to find David standing where she’d left him.  His image grew smaller and smaller until he disappeared from her line of vision.
And for the second time in less than a week she wondered why David had come to the Tanners alone.
