Losing her was the hardest thing he’d ever endured....

Warrior shifter Aiden’s investigation of the trafficking of vampire blood leads to a startling discovery: the beautiful vampire bondmate he thought was dead. Decades ago, they’d defied their powerful families to be together, but then Larissa disappeared without a trace. When their mating link broke, it nearly destroyed Aiden. Now she’s back with no memory of where she’s been. Even more shattering—Larissa claims she has no idea who Aiden is.

Now she’s back....

It’s a race against time to bring down an operation more evil than his pack ever suspected, and Aiden finds himself working side by side with a mate who no longer trusts him—and she wants out. But he lost her once, and he won’t let her go again. Unfortunately, Larissa’s blood is the key to a powerful monster’s dangerous plan—and he’ll stop at nothing to destroy her, sparking off a war between the supernaturals and humans that no one will win.

The vamp must have sensed his intent because he dropped Larissa and ran, sprinting through the club with a preternatural speed. The predator in Aiden wanted to give chase, to hunt him down, but he reined it in for the stronger impulse to protect what was his.

Using all the strength in his hind legs, he jumped from the table and landed right next to Larissa’s still form. Her chest rose and fell steadily and she appeared unharmed. But he wouldn’t be satisfied until he knew for sure.

“Aiden, look at me.” He heard Teresa’s soft voice nearby, but he couldn’t look at her. He refused. All his attention was on Larissa.

“You need to shift back,” Teresa whispered urgently.

He ignored her. That wasn’t happening. Stepping closer to Larissa, he stopped only when her body was completely under him. No one could get to her without going through him. They’d have to kill him first.

“Aiden!” a strong, familiar voice shouted.

His head whipped around to see Connor and Noah moving around the middle bar. Connor had something in his hand. A gun. But that didn’t make sense.

“Aiden, snap out of it. Shift back. Now!” his Alpha commanded with authority.

Part of him was compelled to listen, but . . . No. He could protect Larissa better as a wolf. His inner animal latched on and dug deep, refusing to give up control. Aiden snarled at Connor, baring his canines in a clearly aggressive, defiant display.

The room, which had already quieted down, went deathly silent. Connor’s eyes went wide in shock before they narrowed. He thought he heard someone murmur something about him going feral.

Feral? That’s when it registered what he must look like. Drawing on strength he didn’t know he had, Aiden forced the change. No matter how much he needed to protect Larissa he had to explain to his pack what was going on. So they would protect her. She was all that mattered.

Agony pierced through him as his bones shifted against his wolf’s will until he was crouching naked over Larissa’s still unconscious body. He attempted to stand when something slammed into his chest. He stumbled back from the force of it and saw the raised gun in Connor’s hand.

The deepest sense of betrayal ricocheted through him until he looked down and realized it was a tranquilizer dart. Connor was trying to control the situation, not kill him. It meant he could be trusted. Something his human side knew completely, but his wolf was agitated and wanted to take Larissa far away from everyone and everything. Including his Alpha.

“Bondmate,” Aiden managed to rasp out before a bitter blackness engulfed him.

Review by pearls

This story has all the basic archetypes: the damsel in distress, the wizened elder the femme fatale, the trixter and the Hero.  Part murder mystery, part Gothic romance, it takes the reader on a wild (albeit rainy) ride across England.  The damsel learns to be independent; the hero learns to depend.  And the trixter and femme fatale get their due course.  Although thrown together in a marriage against either's will, they move from "making the best of it" to wild passion as they come to respect and love one another.  A motif throughout is that all is not as appearances first would leave you to believe.  And while both main characters may feel their lives are ruined, they find their lives are only just beginning.

He set the nightshirt back on the bed, and spoke over his shoulder.
"I think it’s time you returned to your room."
He spoke the words without passion. She could only assume he’d had enough talking and wanted her to leave. The night air chilled her skin, and she wrapped her arms around her waist for warmth. She felt rebuffed by him. Stung. Her husband, the man with whom she would spend the rest of her days, did not have the slightest interest in spending a moment more in her company.
She knew she ought to calmly say ‘Very well then, I bid you good night,’ and quit the room, but she feared with a certainty that if she opened her mouth and attempted to utter a single syllable, her voice would falter and reveal the confused tumult of her emotions.
Not because she cared for him. Of course she didn’t. Clearly he did not care for her.
They’d been thrown together, and no amount of wishful thinking or good intentions would create a spark between them, when such a spark was never intended to be. She blinked away tears. Foolish tears! As if he had hurt her, but he hadn’t.
It had just been a long day, and a long night before that, and she'd made a terrible mess of everything, and she hated Quinn. And perhaps still loved him. And she was lonely. So very lonely and frightened of what the future held.
So instead she nodded jerkily, her chin outthrust, and turned on her slippered foot to escape into the dark dressing closet, taking care to close the first and the second door firmly behind her. Miss Randolph reclined in her sleeping gown and robe on the chaise with her book open and steepled across her forehead, snoring, which was just as well because Clarissa could not face the woman’s questions or her pity.
She doused the lamps and, in darkness, with only the scant light from behind the fire grate to see, crawled into bed and lay on unfamiliar sheets, her mind tangled with thoughts of… Mr. Blackmer.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and a shadow moved toward her, stealthily and swift, with only the faint white swath across his hips visible in the night. She recognized Blackmer instantly and desire ignited inside her.        He crouched above her, breathing hard, his skin still damp and the tight flex of muscles in his shoulders darkly illuminated. The scent of the soap from his bath filled her nostrils. Her pulse raced, her heart near exploding.
“You,” he growled deep in his throat. “Are my preference.”
A second later, he kissed her hard, pressing his thumb against the side of her jaw, commanding her lips to part while his tongue boldly entered and teased. She gasped for breath, stunned into half-senselessness…and surrendered, her mouth opening fully to accept each deep, possessing stroke.
He gave a husky groan. His large hands caught hers by the wrists, pinning her to the mattress. She squirmed beneath him—but with no intent to escape.
Moments before he had dismissed her coldly, and made her feel invisible and unwanted and yet in this moment, he revealed his true feelings, ones he’d tried to conceal. She knew without a doubt that her husband desired her. Something about that made her weak, and—
His mouth moved to her cheek…her neck, leaving her skin hot and awakened wherever his lips touched. Sensations she’d never experienced spiraled up from inside her, delicious and achingly sweet, awakening a need in her body and rendering her unexpectedly wild.
God help her, she didn’t understand, but she wanted him as well. The moment he released her hands she moaned and seized his shoulders, sliding her hands upward over his neck, finding unexpected appreciation in the powerful contraction and flux of his muscles beneath her palms. He exhaled, filling her mouth with his breath, and sucked her bottom lip—
Only to groan and twist away.
No. She reached, her hands trailing over his shoulders and his arms, desperately wanting more. More of his kiss, and his warm, firm skin. And yes, for him to ravish her so she would forget—
Then nothing.
The bed creaked, relieved of his weight. She heard his sharp exhalation of breath--a laugh, perhaps?
“Good night then, Mrs. Blackmer,” he murmured.
Silence filled the room.
“Good night,” she answered breathlessly.
He crossed the room, disappearing into the dressing closet, gone the way he had come. She heard the door close.
After a long moment of silence, Miss Randolph’s voice came from the direction of the chaise. “Well that was rather thrilling.”

Review by pearls

One of my favorite parts of a Rebecca Zanetti novel is her ability to create a scene that you can visualize.  The opening scene of Blind Faith is like a scene straight out of a movie, as the spies make their moves and their countermoves.  I also love how intensely her characters' emotions run, whether it's the horror of an explosion or the pain of betrayal or the bonds of brotherhood.  This is not a simple blast from the past reunion story.  The characters have to work at regaining trust, trust in one another and in their love, and the author allows the time for this to build.  But as the outside forces come crashing in, they rally around one another as a tight cohesive unit.  In Jurassic Park, the quote is Life will find a way.  In this genetically altered group, Love and Family find a way, and I cannot get the young Dean boys from their flashbacks out of my mind.

EXCERPT:
“Okay, plug them in.”

I run to the porch and plug in the lights, then run back into the front yard to see them. “Oh, they’re so pretty!”

“Thank God they all work,” he says as he tosses the black shoe down to the ground and then moves carefully down to the ladder. “It would be a bitch to have to take them back down.”

“I checked them,” I assure him, and when his foot finally lands safely on the snow and he turns to me, I hit him on the arm. “You shouldn’t have done that! You took ten years off my life!” I throw my arms around his torso and squeeze him tightly, then back away.

“No, you shouldn’t have been on that ladder. If I catch you on one again, I’ll spank your ass until it glows.”

My jaw drops as I gaze up into his frustrated face. For once in my life, I’m speechless. I scowl as I pull myself together and clench my fists. “You wouldn’t dare . . .”

“Put yourself in danger again and see if I don’t,” he replies calmly and crosses his arms over his chest.

“Did you come here to bully me?”

He sighs and pulls his beanie off his head, pushing his fingers through the messy brown strands. I want to sink my fingers in that thick, dark hair.

“No. I came because you won’t answer your fucking phone so I can apologize for the other night.”

“I don’t want your apology,” I reply and throw the extra lights and staple gun back into the tote and turn away, but he catches my arm and turns me back to him, takes the tote, and sets it down.

“I’m going to give it anyway.” His jaw is firm. “I had no right to kiss you like that in the parking lot for everyone to see.”

I jerk back, mortified. “You’re apologizing for kissing me?”

And don’t forget to read the first book in the Love Under the Big Sky Series…
